Five Midwest Journals To Submit Your Writing

Storm Cellar: A literary journal of safety and danger

Oof! Love, love, LOVE me some Storm Cellar. In the Midwest, they have these twisters, you see–land hurricanes. Zero water. Zip. But they can be just as deadly. Midwesterners dig hobbit holes in the ground which they then crawl into when the weather threatens to whisk everybody away to Oz. Storm Cellar, the magazine, is like the ominous space between storm systems when the wind dies and everything grows quiet and you’re deciding on going underground. Suddenly, a remote tornado siren screams. Then, a drumming coming closer and closer–baseball sized hail. You’re in the eye of the storm.

Moon City Review

What a name! Don’tcha love it? I always imagine a great big, heavy moon just hunkerin’ down and takin’ a look-see, me flashin’ the big guy a thumbs-up. I take comfort knowing he’s up there.

Cimmaron Review

I know what you’re thinkin’: now, this is one of those suit and tie affairs. You’re underdressed? It’s okay. Stop lookin’ around. Here. *Signals waiter*

“Two whiskey sours, please.”

“Yes, sir. Mmm. And I must say, I love your cuff links. Two whiskey sours. On the double.”

As I was saying. You’re fine. Just be yourself. Have a drink. But, yeah. Don’t talk about any of your crazy science fiction ideas in here, okay? Promise me. We’re in Faulkner country. Robert Olen Butler-ville. The land of serious literary prowess.

Slant

There are so many wonderful fishes in these waters doing so many wonderful things that I wish I could mention them all (we’ll get to that), but for now: have you heard of Slant: A Journal of Poetry? Based at the University of Central Arkansas, Slant is a little journal that’s been culling excellence since the eighties. Swim on over and check ’em out!
